Christmas 2020
No air-raid shelter turkey
No window blackout blinds
Defences have been breached, my dear
The battle's in our minds.
The season known for plenty
The wreath upon the door
That signals cautious entry
For the people we adore
And yet despite the battles
And the shadows in our minds
To neutralise this enemy we need
Thoughts of different kinds
Forget about the pressies
And standing for The Queen
Forget about the armchair snooze
And how all things have been
This Christmas will be different
It won't be filled with stuff
There won't be idle chit-chat
Or that entertainment fluff
Let's make ourselves a promise
Let loose that wartime dove.
For Christmas is relationships;
The battlefield is love
So as the siren eases
And the shelters quietly empty..
Let's value all we thought we'd lost
This Christmas 2020.

Is it printed on a poster for all to read
A newspaper closed due to printing what a government didn't want you to hear
A book explaining a better way to live
Graffiti on a wall telling you how it is
This is where freedom finds a way
Broadcast on a radio crackling above live fire
On a television screen, a documentary you have seen
On speakers corner gather round and hear the truth
In a meeting above a pub telling how it was
This is where freedom finds a way
Is it behind the wire of a concentration camp
or cowering in a air raid shelter with sirens ringing your ears
In a first world war trench awaiting certain death
behind the doors of a prison cell
This is where freedom finds a way
In your heart, the pain friends lost
your soul knowing right from wrong
eyes seeing the cruelty and the crimes
In your ears injustice spoken
this is where freedom finds a way
do not oppress us
make us slaves
make us do things against our will
the human race will rebel
this is where freedom finds a way
free will

It was dark in the Air Raid Shelter
Water underfoot
Candles had long since extinguished
But the battle raged all night
Mrs Brown
She's the nosey one
Had peeked though a chink
Sky red with fire cant see anyone
A child started whimpering
Are we going to die
The words started off a chorus
Of cries and shouts "why"
Was a long night
Noise was horrendous
Not knowing was worse
Was fire all round us?
Did we have a chance
Then a lone voice started to sing
Slowly we all joined in
"We'll meet again" echoing
At last the door opened
Daylight blinded us
We were still alive
Our homes were a mess
Then I awoke in a state of trembling fear
Thinking of loved ones lost in the war
