up on Clement’s
we could see everything
we could see the stars
an elevator door opened
and took us to space
where the answer was yes
so we bought that bouquet
wrapped in the news
and brought it down
to the girls
none of them thanked you
or even smiled
mother always said
to count my blessings
when I'm blue
to count them
and I would be happy again
before I ran out of fingers
idleness always drags me
back to the sound
back to the weather
and to watching you sulk
awkwardly framed
in a life you didn’t choose
having been so faithful
when your ship comes in
through a golden morning harbor
be there in advance
with your identification
and baggage
