Zeus
Good evening and sorry I’m late, dear monk
I want you to pray to Zeus for me…..
Because you have more blessed tongue
And I want you to give these humble…..
Sacrifices to our god, Zeus
I thought I could give them myself….
But I actually haven’t been very pious!
For I have committed many sins, but still want to pray
And he may forgive me; I’m only a human of clay
Driven by passion, greed and whim
But I want to repent, so please ask him
The monk: go on, son
I want him to forgive me for cheating on my wife
And for lying to her (almost) my entire life!
That I have an affair with my neighbor
And spend time with her that I don’t go to labor
Please ask him to make me rich
And to grant me a big land
Full of slaves and animals which
(With his blessing) can be a tropical island!
Please ask him to heal my sick mother…..
Because she is very ill
And if she dies please ask him….
Not to send her to hell
Because she raised me up and took care of me
That I eventually turned out this way, you see!
Tell him how much we want kids
That we already made for them beds
Tell the mighty Zeus how big the joy
I’ll have if it is a girl (but especially a boy!)
Pray to him to accept my humble sacrifices
And to increase my virtues and decrease my vices
Pray to him to make my prayers come true
And to save us in this life and help us through
Thank you, dear monk, now I shall leave you
Because you’re always busy and have a lot to do
The monk: I shall take these sacrifices…..
It takes a lot of effort to pray!
Then they wouldn’t be of much use to “Zeus” anyway
But oh! I forgot the man’s prayers…..
I should have made a list
But it’s okay, please mighty Zeus forgive him
And ……. ……..……whatever was the rest!
