Daddy brought it home to mother She did not like it at all, in fact it made her angry Those innocent tough spikey, sword-shaped leaves Centered with white rosettes in tight buds caused anger Today when I see those buds appear I think of you~ Sadness wrenches my heart You meant well and that Yucca has spread There are many white rosette buds dripping dew and rain You called it bear grass while laughing Finding it in the woods you dug it up Those rosettes still in bud waiting to open Mother did not laugh~ she wanted a lilac bush Years later I told my husband not to dig it up Let it stay, memories flood my heart, mind and soul Each spring when the spikes appear straight and strong Loaded with rosettes of your laughter~ my grief wanes Then joy fills my being because Yucca's creamy buds remind me of your love and joy How your emotions could change When seeing the beauty of the simple Yucca buds I think you were a poet and romantic at heart I know this is not a quatrain but is more free verse.

Alex, Thanks for the nice comment. The last of the blooms are now gone but the memory will linger for a long while then soon it will be time for it to blossom again. Daddy called it his Japanese Begonia. LOL..Sara

I really like the thinking behind these lovely words Sara. Love and memories by association - it's as if part of your dad lives on. It fascinates me how people and times we love and fondly remember become woven into our neural tapestry..and I'm going way too deep so I'm going to stop there. Lovely read Sara! Cheers - Gary :)

Connie, I am honored that you would fave this one. I appreciate the fact that you were moved by it. Sometimes the most amazing things can trigger a memory of one or the other of my parents. Once I smelled some soap which brought back the memory of my mother. I had to leave the store and cry in my car. Thanks for the visit. Sara

My dear friend, you may never know just how much your wonderful poem touched this old heart. As the memories of my Dad flooded in and I could see him smiling at me and saying- son you did well, life was not a picnic but you weathered its many storms. I am proud of you.

Nice descriptions of the emotions and memories that the yucca invoked. We have yucca also and I liked it at first, but it spreads fast and we can't seem to be able to get rid of it. I've used the root and leaves as soap. It's also supposed to make a natural shampoo.

Juliet, Well, I am glad that you found a good use for the plant you can't get rid of. There are several species of it so I have read but I am sure they are all similar. It has spread at my house but not very fast. It has been out there over twenty years and there is only about four or five plants from the one daddy planted. Thanks for your visit. Your comments were uplifting. Sara

I have many yuccas in my garden and can't say I like them. But at least they provide some greenery.

Victor, Well, they do provide greenery for 12 months of the year and flowers for a brief time. They can be used around a perimeter as a defense against those things you don't want to enter your yard. Thanks for the visit. Sara
