Youth Frozen Forever
Youth frozen forever
In the glimpse of a lens,
By black and white photos
Of gallant young men
Fatigue-clad ‘neath helmets,
Their rifles in hand
With somber expressions
And burning resolve
As airplanes and ships
Launched forward to France,
Where peril abounded
On Normandy sands
As parachutes floated
And men lurched ashore
Or fell to the waves,
Lives brief when exchanged
For freedom’s grand cause
That day worth remembering:
June Sixth, Forty-Four;
Give thanks in a prayer
For those men the lens caught,
Youth frozen forever.
