Your Eyes

Your Eyes

Your innocent and forgiving eyes
Break down any disguise I may devise
They look at me and through me at the same time
   Piercing the wall of scars
    Breaking down my bars…

     Unconsciously, sensing what I need
      Feeling my vibes
       Feeding my needs
        Opening my heart wide
So they can see what’s inside…

They calm my spirits when I’m in emotional distress
Give me hope when I’m in duress
Peace when my mind is on a thousand chases
       Focus when my heart races
Always taking me to better places…

They see the pain in my laughter
    Offer me shelter after
Move closer when my body says stay away
Reassuring me everything will be okay
This is what your eyes say…

What I like most is that the poem avoids the easy conclusion of "I was wrong." Instead, it's about realizing that being completely convinced you're right can be its own kind of danger. The speaker isn't haunted because they were evil; they're haunted because they never imagined they could be mistaken. That feels more honest and, in a way, more unsettling.

You must love her deeply for her eyes to have so much influence, Lay. A lucky man you are to have a lady who offers reassurance, calms your spirits and knows what you need. Beautifully written! Love, Carolyn
