You Stay, I’ll Go

Stay here… please.
Let me be the one to go this time.
Let me walk away first,
so it looks like I chose the distance…
not like you drifted away
and I just stood here,
waiting for something that never returned.

It’s always others who leave me.
Always someone else
slipping quietly out of my life,
leaving me holding
the echo of what used to be.

Just once—
I want to know how it feels
to be the one who walks away
before love does.
