You Just Couldn'T
YOU JUST COULDN’T
When we were small you threatened to steal my toys,
But you always liked my pretty hair - so you just couldn’t.
When we married you wanted to give me the most
Expensive wedding but you had no job so you just couldn’t.
It was the happiest day in my life all the same.
When our kids were naughty you said
You would punish them after chores
But you were so close to them,
Played and talked with them so much, you just couldn’t.
Then you went off to war and promised me to stay alive.
In the worst battle your four buddies were trapped -
You knew that rescue was almost impossible -
You thought of leaving them, but you just couldn’t.
Went out to get them, were shot, tried to get to your feet
And struggle back to the lines and you just couldn’t.
You said you would keep your promise to me to come home alive;
But you just couldn’t.
