You Cannot Get There From Here
I thought I had a road map in the car trunk with the spare.
I thought we had a compass and I really thought you cared.
So sure of our direction that I didn't check the fuel.
And so, our love has stalled now, and I look just like a fool.
I thought we had provisions that would last us through the trip.
I thought it would be simple. Never thought that we would slip.
I knew where we were going. I had picked the simplest route.
But I forgot to read the signs and turned us all about.
Perhaps I was naïve to think the stars pointed the way.
And if I kept on driving we would get there one fine day.
That, maybe we can get there if we make another turn.
Seems life has many lessons that are difficult to learn.
I stopped to ask directions, “Tell me, which way we should go.”
Some said to keep on going while some said they didn't know.
Then someone, laughing, told me, “Son, can you take some advice?
The road you want’s not easy, and you cannot drive it twice.”
I can see our destination. I see it bright and clear.
But, I’ve begun to fear that you cannot get there from here.
I almost think we’ll make it ‘cause it seems so very near.
And yet, I still suspect that you cannot get there from here.
