You and I

Lemon and lime Vodka, remember Black sockets slewing a curtain Hidden, a sudden frightened parasol We are completely closed to them They pass like ghosts and I seldom remember Their name and species The cut of the coat and a sacrificial Nothing We take our corner Childish how you react To a fortress you cannot break out of We are dead and this is our crypt Pass by or god forbid you make us vomit A love of divorcing slaughterers Water runs rampant, as vodka As ice, as blood The rest is a box A ribbon and yours, do not touch me Just take it and leave Lower your head A toast to the crooked hammer We sleep a beautiful rhapsody of grey Ochre in our chambers a full view Liquid silvers this looking glass shimmers Slowly recoiling You come closer and contaminate with filthy dark glaring eyes Shrieking with the absolute Devil of truth We are you.

I never thought I could be so moved by a poem about a man and his drink -- the "absolute Devil of truth" rings loud and clear, Nathaniel! Love, Carolyn
