Yesterday's Brew
Yesterday’s Brew
Her sleep-twisted eyes wake early Monday morning
from a Friday night dream of memories and laughter
The coffee smells black like yesterday’s brew
but today she needs creamer and a cigarette too
Rays of love shimmer through her window,
warming just her toes in the carpet squares of light
When the sun shines this bright, she misses the moon,
(It’s too soon, it’s too soon…)
but in the dark hours, she’ll float under the stars
Listening to music with her heart behind curtains,
music that you never could write for her
Trouble lays on a pillow in the back
When it leaves she goes yearning for the past
She sleeps in your bed just to leave it unmade
Walks to the window just to pull down the shade
While you stand out with the rain and the sun
Waiting there just to watch the only open opportunity, close
-realizing she is the cloud soaking your sunlight
and you’ll never be warm again…
All those times you hoped to be the daylight in her heart.
You know now you were just the starlight in her eyes,
don’t you?
Don’t you…?

Author’s Post Note:
Just put on a coat until summer arrives,
Then add some milk and sugar to your coffee.
You’ll feel better.
