Yes My Thumb Is This Green

Give me a trowel, seeds, a straw hat, and a boat load of dirt.
Dump it into a fierce pile, and I will throw myself onto it.
Hugging it like a California hippie hugs her trees.
Hire me a tiller and let me make friends with the earth worms.

I will plant potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, peas, carrots and beans,
daffodils, cone flowers, roses, lilacs, crepe myrtle, and marigolds.
Spending six to eight glorious hours outside, being a gardener.
Renegade plants will admire me and push up through the soil.

I will have violets, red mushrooms, and Queen Anne’s Lace.
There might be a giant sunflower, and my apple tree will blossom.
Give me a plant, a bush, a tree, or a seed and stand back.
We might grow Jack’s beanstalk because my thumb is this green!

I love gardening. I refer to it as dirt therapy.
