Wrong Gift

WRONG GIFT

I gave him glass so he could see
Much further and with clarity
A focused lens which magnifies
Binoculars for his teenage eyes
But gave it I to him or me?

I thought to share the sights, just we -
The stars, the birds up in the tree:
To see the wonders of the skies
I gave him glass.

But he was even then too free
To dabble thus with imagery -
His int’rest in practical lies
And later won many a prize.
I gave an illusory spree -
I gave him glass.

Note

This is the real story of a gift I once gave at Christmas to my then
fourteen year old son, whose interests I clearly misjudged at the time.
He almost never used the binoculars

Sounds like my son and me. We were always polar opposites in every thing. We had a little trouble relating to each other until he was grown. We seem to understand each other better now. Great write!
