Written

I’m not good with directions
If they’re not in written form.
My brain cannot retain them;
I don’t know if that’s the norm.

So whether it’s instructions
For a project or a meal
Or a way to get from here to there
By train or at the wheel…

Or the steps involved to tie a knot
Or scarf around the neck,
My attempts to follow explanations
Just make me a wreck.

Yet, when there’s an outline listed
On a paper I can read,
I at least will understand the ways
In which I can proceed.

I once read, it’s either left or right,
The way our brains are wired,
But whichever way is mine, I know
The written word’s required.

So true. I almost always get lost. I'd worry about Alzheimers, but I've always been this way. Thank you for this poem.

I'm at the age that I need instructions to get almost anywhere written down, otherwise I get lost! Sadly I am susceptible to panic attacks. It's worst at night when I've lost my way on a road I'm on for the first time! Enbjoyed this poem very much. / Maurice

Hello Ilene, I love this poem, especially the way your mind/brain works to synthesize and convey your deliciously humorous thoughts. And I, like you need directions and instructions on paper too!

You're not alone Ilene, word of mouth doesn't always work, you forget bits and take a left instead of a right lol. Tom
