Words Over Words

We had words over words.
Though this saddens some
I find myself encouraged,
more hopeful for the future.

We had words over words
instead of rocks over words
or bullets over words
or bombs bursting over words.

The bruising of an ego
is less consequential
than the loss of a limb
or the loss of a life.

We had words over words,
we will live to write another day.

I read once, that the farthest distance between family, friends, and loved ones is ... misunderstanding. Your words over words reminded me of that John. To argue over words, is so futile, and ultimately so regrettable. A very strong message in your poem John.

Thanks so much. I never heard the “misunderstanding” quote before but it sure makes sense. John

Maybe one of the reasons there is so much strife in the world, John, is that too many people have a too limited vocabulary.

Good wisdom in these words, friend. The challenge is to apply them. I've been writing close to 40 years now, almost every day. Presently paginating a book of 100 Latin epigrams (my translations) of the Latin poet Martial. Thanks for stopping by. / Maurice

They no more use words over words, have not for a long time. Everything, no matter how miniscule, must be handled with violence. Powerful J
