Words of a Soldier

They call me crazy They call me naive They call me suicidal But I don’t blame them They speak only out of love For their fear of losing me ingurgitate their inner soul like how the floodwater devours the houses and the trees As for me I call it altruism for the vulnerable I call it safeguarding my motherland for my children to prosper on it I call it liberation from the hands that only knows conflict and bloodshed I call it being your emblem of freedom Fear not for I will be your beast of burden I will carry the weight of the grave economic, political and social repercussions on my shoulders I will pay the price for our human err so that you get a second chance to mend your ways In victory I will be magnanimous Appreciate me not by gold and jewels But glorify me with your heartfelt thank you and a beautiful smile Don’t glorify my name but rather glorify peace that I bring on to you And in defeat don’t weep for my untimely demise My soul shall become one with the land I loved so much so that I was willing to lay my life down for it Please I only ask you pay homage for what I have accomplished so far Tell my family and my country that I did not die in despair I left this world with a grin on my face Because I knew I paved way for a better tomorrow for my nation I was ready to sacrifice myself to give you equanimity and hope for better days I have served my country well till the bitter-sweet end I gave it all my very best Now my weary soul may find rest

Such nobility in your words Rercy. Honoring the soldier for their accomplishments and self-sacrifice. "Appreciate me not by gold and jewels But glorify me with your heartfelt thank you and a beautiful smile" - very touching and real. I'm so glad I read this today. Keep writing and sharing, dear poetess! ~ John
