Words

You found my words, hidden amongst the trees They drew you in Rooted you to the spot Kept you near You desired them Coveted them They came to be as oxygen to your lungs They spilled from me, always From my mind, through my fingers, out on to the page The paper The screen Though never from my lips You would have them though It was …. Inevitable …. Necessary “Tell me” you demanded softly “Give me the words” I couldn’t Not those ones Not the ones you wanted to hear But you were patient You were kind You pushed slowly, surely And I was safe with you Wasn’t I? And a word, one word, slipped from my lips Then another You encouraged “Place them together Side by side for me Use them Speak them as a sentence” I couldn’t, shouldn’t (Hesitation and traffic cones piling up inside my head) “Give me the words …. babygirl” you soothed And despite the warnings in my head …. I fell In to you, through you You caught me with your words and carried me off in to the night I didn’t look back
