Notes About The Poem

WOODSMOKE

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The limp red sock, half-forgotten on the mantel, still smells of oranges crushed in December mittens. Its toe cradles a fossilized candy cane, while the heel remembers the weight of walnuts. Once, it bulged with promises— a tangerine sunrise, chocolate coins, and the thrilling rustle of cellophane. Now, it sags like an unanswered letter. I press my face into its woolen hollow and inhale childhood like woodsmoke.
Ouch. I'm with your daughter. No woodsmoke for me, thanks. ~ Fred 'Fertilizer' Flinstone
Dear Sara, you gave me so many nostalgic memories of sights and sounds. We used to have a wood stove that we burned every winter. Unfortunately, my youngest daughter had asthma, and we had to get rid of it. :( Autumn Blessings, Dear Sara, Daniel
I'm delighted my poem stirred memories for you. We once had a 'real' fireplace but neither of us could handle the smoke. Thanks for visiting and commenting. Merry Christmas
