Wonder

Wonder!

I came home
to see a cardinal
perched lightly
on my porch railing,
a breathing ruby,
resplendent as a king:
soon his queen
came and as I watched
in deepest pleasure,
they flew off as one.

Cardinals mate for life
and it is said...
during courtship
the male gathers food
and brings it to his lady,
feeding her beak to beak.

Then I wondered
at what pleasure
the Lord of a vast Universe
must take in this winged love
gifted with freedom of the air...

a gift I might envy till
I remember the gift
He bestowed on us--
the immortal soul....

I had no idea cardinals mate for life. This is a winner, no matter if there was a contest.

Thank you Harry-- lately I've been wondering what it would be like to see virtually everything that happens in the universe....

Thanks, Nette, hopefully a part 2 will come to me sometime--these things (my poems) seem to have a mind of their own, coming unbidden and unexpected.
