Within An Ancient Song

"Within An Ancient song." A story poem By, Michael .P. Clarke. (EPIC.) Anubis' Temple. The Valley of kings Here they were again No successful dig This time steps they found Everyone did dig this day Digging down More and more steps In the depths a mighty door On the door a figure painted It was Anubis The door curse bound They stood in awe Egyptians and British Egyptologists Silence did reign One figure descended the steps An Egyptian of prodigious strength In his hands a mighty hammer With this hammer egress to the chamber Curse or no they would enter They crossed the threshold To Hieroglyphs little attention was payed A cursed warning to those who entered Stretching into the distant dark a corridor The stone floor was cold The air musty What ancient power here had been centered Skeletal slaves were chained to the wall There torches scanned the corridor Forward they walked with trepidation The gladness was now gone Everyone moved along slowly Another door at the end of this corridor Again the figure of Anubis painted Again the powerful Egyptian did attack a door It took many blows before the mighty door gave Their feet stepped over the threshold This time not all Light did spring forth The floor and the walls alive with light Light that danced around a mighty chamber This floor was not stone It was warm Not cold The curse on the door The curse would befall all those within They hear the mighty Anubis He calls from the underworld Then their ears hear life start The temple is now alive The temple is alive Thump Thump Thump Thump Thump Thump Thump Thump The beating heart of Anubis Holograms they now did see Holograms they had to be Ancient Egyptians as they once had been Such a wondrous sight No Egyptian made a sound They walked in glory Children of an ancient time Anubis sat on his throne in this scene Then a collapsing of the corridor Those outwith running for their lives The Hieroglyphs curse lived on. Now with these Ancients their lives would end The corridor outwith filled with sand No messages of goodbye could they send They were left alone Death awaited them In the heart of the temple A mighty fire did ignite The professor remembered what the Hieroglyphs said They would end their days with the long since dead Then a deep voice from the throne on the far wall.......... One Egyptian escaped the corridor alive The Egyptian with the hammer His last words to me I heard the booming voice of Anubis.......... To be continued.......... 25/12/2018

An excellent descriptive narrative, Mike. No Vikings this time, but equally powerful. Looking forward to the next part. Best regards, my friend. // paul

I adore Egyptology Mike and I have artifacts all over my home of that ancient time. I really enjoyed your story and I will look forward to reading more! Very intriguing! I haven't felt I could do Egypt justice so I have only written one poem about Egypt. Blessings for the New Year Mike! xxoo

This story you wrote about ancient God Anubis is quite intriguing. Of course, I had to look it up (may be you can add a footnote to your epic stories to provide the back ground) to appreciate the scene you painted. Looks like you have studied the subject..the curse was real..good that one man survived and now he carries the words of Anubis..for the next episode. Well done, Mike.
