Notes About The Poem

Valley

With valleys full of flowers

January thaw,
the sun is shining now that
snow-filled clouds have disappeared.
     The telephone rings,
but again it is not you
calling to see I’m still here.

Do you still live there
where mountaintops touch blue sky,
with valleys full of flowers?
     City streets are filled
     with rambunctiousness and noise,
     your laughter is far away.

The letter I sent
has been returned, now unknown
as if you faded away.
     Long ago you smiled
     as you read the poetry
written for you, my lost muse.

I agree with KIm--a bittersweet poem about losing touch with someone and wishing you could tell them how important that person was to us. Well done.

Lost in time. Bittersweet letter, returned, never read, still it would seem it’s meaningful. I once tried a roundabout way to find someone, at least perhaps their kid, to thank someone for the good they did, but alas… still heaven hears.

Yes. It is sad when we lose touch with someone who meant a lot to us.
