With fingers crossed
I was screaming at the top of my lungs
when I heard a familiar melody.
My eyes opened wide
when my mother’s name lit up my screen.
My heart pounded
as her words rattled it further.
The air split in two—
and silence deepened beyond silence.
I wasn’t aware of what happened next
until loud honking snapped me back,
nearly losing my balance in front of a truck.
The phone call kept ringing in my head,
on a loop.
My mother's words—
tightening around my chest.
A minute went by.
Then two.
Then three.
Then an hour.
And then another half.
Only then did I find a ride to take me to where I needed to go.
I wasn’t sure how long the drive lasted
until I arrived.
At the gates,
I stood frozen in place.
Fingers crossed so tight
they began to ache.
A shiver crawled down my spine with an icy touch.
My bones felt stone-cold,
yet when I looked up,
the sun burned my eyes.
Hands were trembling and
my joints began losing all weight.
The world spun—
As if mocking my imbalance.
My nerves scattered
like ash in a fire.
Only I was burning.
As I walked in, every step feels heavier than the last.
I was led to a room.
At the door,
with fingers crossed,
I wondered what I would find inside—
My brother...
Or a body.
