Notes About The Poem
My response to the evil in high places

Willfully Blind

We have been blind
We have been weak
Never looking behind
The covering sheet
Of fake smiles and lies
With evil eyes
We didn't want to see

America the beautiful
The land of the free
But not for those
Who we deem to be
Unworthy of humanity

Too poor to pursue
the happiness we think we are due
Giving you power and hiding the truth

I hear the cries of a thousand lives
Judged unworthy of love
Judged not good enough
Their blood calls to us from the ground
Buried under the feet of the proud

The forgotten ones who were stolen from
A society who wouldn't see
The innocent who begged
For a hero that didn't free them

I cannot wait for you To meet
The one who created their souls
I cannot wait for you
To face the innocent ones you stole

Justice will be done, for everyone
And eternity will be so sweet
Without the wickedness
we pretend we don't see

Go for a scroll
Down memory lane
And this way nothing will ever change

So just keep your head in your stories, your ears plugged with buds
Your screen on bright,
the sound turned way up
Pretend you don't know and you can't see
The lost broken souls for which I weep

Go for a scroll
Down memory lane
And this way nothing will ever change
Go for a scroll
Down memory lane
And this way nothing will ever change

This poem is excellent. It calls out the wrongs of a nation committed to the unfortunate. I love this poem. You are talented.

I just realised that I hadn't read a Chrystal Woods poem for a while and I stumbled upon this. This is superbly worded. The statement that the only way evil can flourish is for good citizens to do nothing, rings so true in your rousing poem. Very best.

Dear Crystol, what a searing indictment of the "digital anesthesia" we use to numb ourselves to systemic suffering. I found the repetition of "Go for a scroll / Down memory lane" very biting, it transforms a casual smartphone habit into a repetitive act of moral avoidance. It’s a powerful, uncomfortable, being "willfully blind" isn't just a passive state, it’s an active choice we make every time we turn the volume up to drown out the cries of the "unworthy." Amen! Blessings, Daniel
