Why Not

Behold, begast and be amazed
     At what we all have done.
     But never look too closely at
     What's hidden from the Sun.

     Surely we assume to know
     More than we can see
     Maggots festering in the rot
     Is knowledge we have got.

     So then why be
     So surprised
     When differences arise;
     And friend kills friend
     For nothing
       and nothing going on.

     Be shallow, shirk work.
     And stay jealous of everyone:
     But be warned about the truth of it. . .
     What a man has in this life is the work he has done.
