Who Are You Really

Who are you really?

Who are you really?
Behind the mask you show to others.
What does the smile hide?
The one you feel obligated to wear.
The spirit behind the eyes?
That look away when noticed.
The worry lines upon your brow?
They tell quite a story.

Who are you really?
The person you hide from others.
The face of truth about your heart?
You dare not allow to show.
The emotions of a human?
The signs of weakness or hurt.
The humanity behind the wall?
That fear has hardened to stone face.

Who are you really?
Your thoughts, tears, and fears.
The person you have always been?
But think none will understand.
The broken child or injured adult?
The one that fears to love.
The human who shields themselves?
From scrutiny of the world.

Methinks everyone wears the mask.
