Whispered Lies

The staircase to a bedroom of lies
creaks, with worn-out balusters
from the palms of lovers
that shook the handrail as they climbed...trapped
by a honey smile beneath eyes of desire
offered to quench their thirst
    for companionship
paid for by illusion proffered
as more than a splash of perfume...used
to cover the rust exposed
from the dusty bones of dying love
that feeds on poison crumbs
left to kill any memory of each changing face
that gave comfort and refuge
to an endless cycle of drudgery
each time you whispered in my ear
I promise...never again

Frederic, dear friend, dear poet, your golden pen reveals a portrait of betrayal with evocative poetic finesse. “Cover the rust exposed from the dusty bones of dying love” is truly striking, as is the dramatic deceit of the last line. Exceptional, as always. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

outstanding poem, Frederic. This is a fantastic contest entry...so much to like about the poem, i.e., the staircase to a bedroom of lies creaks, with worn-out balusters Your poem was evocative and captivating.
