Where the stars keep us

Where the Stars Keep Us
Some people leave quietly,
 not with a final goodbye,
 but with an empty chair,
 a familiar name
 that suddenly hurts to hear.
And somehow,
 the world keeps moving.
The sun still rises.
 Coffee still gets cold.
 People still laugh
 about things that don't matter
 when your heart is remembering
 everything that does.
I wonder sometimes
if you can see us from wherever you are
 the little moments,
 the big changes,
 the lives that kept unfolding
 after yours had to end.
I hope you know
 you are still here.
In the stories we tell,
in the songs that catch us off guard,
in the places we can't walk past
 without thinking of you.
You're in the photographs
 we almost forgot we had.
 You're in the memories
 that somehow grow clearer
 with every passing year.
And on nights
when the sky is scattered with stars,
 I like to believe
there's a little piece of you
 somewhere among them
not because I need to pretend
 you're still within reach,
but because love doesn't understand
 the rules of leaving.
It doesn't disappear
 when a heartbeat does.
It simply changes shape.
So I'll keep looking up.
And if one star
seems to shine a little brighter,
 I'll let myself believe
 for just a moment
that you're reminding me
 that the people we love
 are never completely gone.
Somewhere,
they become part of the sky,
and part of us.
