Where Did the Young Ones Go?

They raised their young ones
Made sure they got what they needed
Tried to give them what they wanted
Gave up their lives
To keep them safe and happy
Times change
Age takes its toll on mind and body
Their hair turns grey
Their memories fade
Jobs that paid well are no longer
They are left at home
No longer needed
No longer wanted
All alone
Their young ones have lives of their own
Their own young ones
Their own jobs
Their own lives
There is no time for the old
Who sit on their couch…staring
The TV is their only friend
They count the days
The weeks
The months since they had a visitor
Finally the days stop
They look at the door
Waiting for it to open
Hoping for a single knock
Until their hope fades
Finally they die alone
Then the young ones will visit
Even if it is just to say good-bye

Oh, Robert, you hit on something that really tears my heart apart. Too many elderly are lost and forgotten by the "young ones" they raised. Our whole family was with my father when he was dying in the hospital and a nurse told us it was so unique because most of her elderly patients had few visitors. Seniors deserve our love and support. Excellent poem!
