Notes About The Poem

Maybe I should  call this retirement, or my career, or old fart.  What do you think?

Where Did My Life Go

Where Did My Life Go
Kevin Davis 2024

Where did my life go, how was I to know,
That I would grow to be old and still grow,
To learn things that I didn’t know before,
Just in time, like autumn leaves falling to the ground.

When I was younger, I thought I knew it all,
People would ask me many questions so dull.
From somewhere in the back of my head, I would discover,
The very answer to the question I had found.

I am not so smart, it's just that my head was filled,
With trivial things that others forgot, yet still,
I managed to convince professors and claim my prize,
Receiving degrees and licenses with pride.

In cheap frames, I hung them prominently on the wall,
For all to see what a smart man I am to all.
People did come to see me, and I hoped I didn't fail,
To find the hope and reason to abound in every tale.

So, we talked about their problems and formed plans of care,
Addressing personal needs, creating solutions fair.
Meeting individuals, couples, families, or groups,
We found the way for their relief, action-bound in loops.

Now my career has ended, I often work at times,
Helping others where I can, happy in these climbs.
Content with using my mind for others' peace,
Comforted in all the knowledge I've found, I find release.

Retirement during work life is often a fleeting dream,
But when it comes, it becomes day-to-day, it seems.
We retired still have much to offer beyond our experience,
It's our need to be around, to share wisdom with persistence.

We need to live our lives, be valued for who we are,
Loving and valuable, a vital resource to go far,
For the good of all, our essence is truly profound,
In life's symphony, now we are all that we ever wanted to be.
