When You'Re Five

The bark of a stray dog joins wailing winds,
howling like a banshee in between gusts.
And a child cowers in a dark corner
with his teddy bear, the one thing he trusts.
The moon is sulking behind charcoal clouds
as a muggy summer night turns to gloom.
And the rain falls in tumultuous drops,
as lightning flashes light up his bedroom.
As the tears swell, emotional dams burst;
instantly flooding this little boy's face.
And when thunder claps explode in the night,
his heartbeat jumps into a rapid pace.
The world's a frightening place when you're five,
filled with things that want to eat you alive.
