When We Were Young
When we were young
Summer stretched
In brilliant splendor
As the last school bell tolled
We spilled forth from
School marm’s arms
And greeted freedom
In the jeweled waters
of beach and stream
With picnics, sunburns
And warm summer nights
In tents
Listening drowsily to the cicadas song
