When the Sleeper Awakes

As the blazing sun
heats up the day
            the sleeper awakes
After years of
 somnolence
he faces the new age
Untold difficulties
are before him
His life is anything but easy
Yet, for all that
             he moves proudly
into the arena
The crowd is there - always the crowd
             Eyes which have been covered
for a millenium
         awaken to loud cheering
and a clear sky
       Shaking off the weight
of the years
              he moves into action
His friends and enemies have
   long since disappeared into
the shadows
        the burden is now on
him and him alone
Let's hope he can bear it
for all our sakes
