When Love Departs

There is a pain within the soul 
that far exceeds the body's pain. 
An ache no mortal can console 
except by love’s return again. 

When love and all its warmth depart, 
how chill and dark the vacancy, 
how pitiful the trampled heart, 
how empty the unloved can be.
