When Elected

To enter this contest on Poetry Soup
They asked for a tale, a story – THE POOP
The only condition, you had to produce
The story as written by the great Dr. Seuss

Now this story begins as most stories start
With the who, when and where and all of their parts
The when – well it’s election time
The who – let’s say it’s a local swine
The where – why Whosville, nothing but
And that leaves nothing but the what

The mayor of old Whosville said
I’m tired of this town, instead
I think I’ll go to Washington
And show them all what can be done
I think I’ll travel there by train
And, at every stop explain
But first I’ll have to get a PAC
To fund my run, to have my back
Who’ll tell me what I need to say
To get the folks to see my way
To hide my past – my skeletons
At least the real creepy ones
And I’ll have to have an aide
A temporary one that won’t get paid
Who’ll always stand there by my side
To tell me when to duck and hide
The media will be my friend
Depending on how much I spend
I’ll tell this crowd I’m for defense
If that is what they think makes sense
At other times – economy
I’ll say is where our goals should be
Not till elected will they see
There is a little Grinch in me

Go on an laugh and laugh out loud
You namby-pamby foolish crowd
They used to laugh that is until
I became the king in small Whosville

This story is quite sad – but true
It happens to me and it happens to you
The WHO may be known by a different name
But all the WHOs play the very same game

this is wonderful! i think dr. seuss would have gotten a real kick out of using his style to write about politics. his poems all had important underlying themes, so this would fit right in. congrats on your placing in the contest!

Mike...altho this wasn't truly a children's poem, one of the kid judges understood it clearly, while the others were scratching their heads. I personally loved how you infused the theme of politics and political correctness into this rhyme..It was outstanding! It was so thoroughly tho't out and intellectually savvy! Congrats again, Gwendolen

This is like a Dr Suess / Jon Stewart colaberation. Very topical and current eventish with a childrens poem presentation. Sometimes I think these politicians take us for little kids, so I guess this is very apropos. Nicely done, Mike. Good luck with your campaign. Joe
