When Dogs Go To Heaven

they don’t wait in lines
don’t knock on doors
don’t ask for permission to come inside
they just run
full speed through golden fields
paws never knowing ache again
tongues hanging loose, catching the wind
like they never stopped chasing the sky
when dogs go to heaven
they don’t cry at the gates
don’t bow their heads
don’t beg for a place to rest
they just find it
under the biggest tree,
where the shade is cool and the ground is soft
where the air smells like home
and the voices they missed are calling their name
when dogs go to heaven
they don’t say goodbye
don’t feel the weight of leaving
don’t wonder if they were enough
they just know
because love like that doesn’t fade
it stretches, it lingers, it waits
and when we finally get there
they’ll come running
tails wagging, tongues out
like not a single day has passed
