Notes About The Poem
Written to be read at my granddaughters mother's celebration of life
When A Mom Dies
When a mom dies a deafening waterfall of tears
conceals a sorrowful serenade of wailing souls
and the agonizing sound of hearts shattering,
not just from the unyielding pain of loss
but from the void left in a unique chain of love
that tightly held close every person it touched.
When a mom dies, a secular kind of love is severed
making those nearest to them feel less than whole
as if a piece of themselves has forever vanished
and all that remains is a strange hurt within
that haunts the heart at unique points in time
swooping in just long enough to make tears.
When a mom dies, sons and daughters yearn
for one more day, hour, or minute with mom
to say everything, they wished they had said
for at these most painful times in our lives
it is the weight of all the words unspoken
that burdens our souls and tortures our minds
until we realize that a mom’s love is infinite
and her ability to forgive is boundless.
