What's Left Of Your Heart

Concealed behind an emotionless mask, emptiness levies a terrible toll. For to feel one fleeting moment of peace you must sacrifice both body and soul. Cringing all alone, wiping away tears: you exonerate the cold edge of steel. And lingering on the fringes of fear, guilt, admonishes you for how you feel. Shards of indifference cut into flesh: and your inhibitions begin to fade. For anticipating instant relief: your expectations empower the blade. With a vague awareness of your heartbeat: you watch as crimson drops flow from your vein. And anxiety speeds your throbbing pulse: as cutting starts to numb, your greater pain. A feeling of fragmentation follows: as you crawl into what's left of your heart. And sedated within its scarlet pool: you gather each piece as it falls apart.

Thanks Laura, like most of my poems I express empathy through my words, but they remain fiction nonetheless. Emile.
