What You Deserve

I want to pluck him
from this terrible situation
and his past.
He has been hurt
and beaten
and bruised
long before I could get to him,
yet I still sit with my guilt
for not being able to prevent
monsters from tearing him down.
My boy,
I wish I could cradle you
against my chest,
my heart beating against your ear;
My heart beats only for you.
My love is genuine,
I could never hurt you.
