What of a Cigarette
A stimulant for the staid
And a habit for the twitchy
A taste and a sensation missed
And a link to lots of memories;
Oddly enough, a romance for some.
They come in tens and twenties
Though singly they are lit
Then puffed and puffed to naught
In quiet sometimes, for solace I guess
Oddly enough, a reproach for some.
New brands in cities abound
And vintage brands as well
To give an ache in the traches
And a drought in the mouth
Oddly enough, a nice feeling for some.
The slim and the fragrant
The staid and the gratifying
Convincing and disturbing
Disappointing to wake up from
Though oddly enough, the dreams persist.
A shared experience with a friend perhaps
A flicker of memory long back in time
While driving or thinking or walking
While chatting or waiting or watching
And oddly enough, whilst doing nothing at all.
It’s consolation for some I think
Reflection for others; a pause I think
It’s tenderness for some I think
Optimism for others; humanity itself I think
While oddly enough, a poison quite lethal.
Whole industries dot the globe
Billion dollar slow-death industries
To turn the teeth brown
To darken the lungs
To weaken the heart
To make them stink
To bring pain in the end
O what a silly thing to smoke!
