What Might They Find There
What might they find if at all they bothered,
To look deeper than they normally do?
Past the gloomy sullen facade I give
Past the show I put on every day?
Would they find a smile that shines so bright?
Would they be warmed by all that care and love inside of me?
Or would they see only the soot
And feel the coldness of the hate that lives next door in my heart?
Would they see my past mistakes? All the times I fell off the edge
Or would they see the strength that lies inside
Hidden like the dormant volcanic mountain?
Waiting to erupt like a panther waits to pounce?
If they choose to look deeper still
Would they see the wounds that still fester?
Would they hear the muffled cries?
Would they feel and touch those tears that fall like rain?
If they looked deeper still would they find that innocence?
Lying at the bottom like a broken pot?
Shattered illusions of the goodness of mankind
Glued together and barely holding on?
Would they find the place my heart runs to hide?
The shade where my thoughts find release?
The hands that hold me together or the voice that soothes me to sleep?
The balm that soothes my pain and the kiss that caresses my heart?
If they looked deeper they might just find me.
