What Images We Recall
What Images We Recall?
What images we recall,
As cannons fire, release their smoke?
Mud drenched battlefields abroad
Rat infested
Trenches full of comrades bodies
That offer warmth while they die
Implore us to continue the fight
“Win the war, and stand firm
That freedom remains, our children to
Obtain.”
What images we recall?
As poppies fasten to lapels,
Blood red petals, black powder centers.
Medals, uniforms, wreaths,
Reveille.
Swift steps, barbed wire,
Comrades falling, helpless we stare
Continue on, maimed and broken
Our task this position we must secure.
What images we recall?
Our grandchild’s hand lost in our grasp
Remembrance of the reason
We put our lives on hold
Our sacrifice,
We recall
The reason for it all
Our future generation -
Our reward.
