What Do I Do

I come up
with a melody
when I read Zora
Langston stops
me
Baldwin is
a hot Summer sidewalk
baking under my
waffle soles
what do I do
I sit down and write
Jack sends
in all direction
i'm splitting
like...an...atom
Miles is my molecule
what do I do
I sit down and write
Bird comes out
of my pores
Monk I damn well
seize
after he seizes me
what do I do
I listen to
the past
wail
and I cry
my new song
