What Did You Do to Me?

What did you do to me?
I am not who I used to be.
I'm painting my nails, doing my hair,
In my walk there is a flair.
Is this fair or unfair?
What did you do to me?
Your one gaze is glory.

My heart wants freedom, it's jumping from the cage,
It's maroon now, before it was just a boring beige,
Oh, what did you do to me?
I am not who I used to be.

I am happy and I am crying,
Sometimes, I'm flying and dying,
Mostly crying myself I found
When you're not around.
Am I in love?
Is love something you wove?
O sweetness, what did you do to me?
O goodness, set me free!

The day that you saw me for the first time,
Your face sparked up, only you heard a chime.
I'll never forget your mouth agape,
Your eyes wrapped around me like a drape.
I wanted to see myself through your eyes
And see what secrets your eyes disguised.

I have been thinking and thinking and thinking again
About the soothing pain, then I realised it wasn't the rain
As the tears I felt on my fingertips when I touched my face,
Maybe because I wanted you to embrace.

The night is petrifying and daylight exposes me,
Coffee won't wake me up let alone the tea,
I'm too deep thinking about you,
Devotion, my lungs feel blue.

I haven't tasted a word since
I caught your glimpse,
I haven't even touched a pen, let alone a notebook,
Love is heavy, I'll turn into Ophelia dying in a brook.

Now I want to taste the nectar of your lips,
God knows how many beats my heart skips,
I want to hold your hand and never let go,
Your arms around me, a heaven, please know.

O sweetness, O sweetness,
What did you do to me!

Dearest Anne, I love how you paint the picture of change deep down, in the color of your heart, in the way your world has shifted from beige to maroon. The vulnerability you show, the honesty about the crying and the flying, the happiness and the heartbreak—it’s so real, so human. I think anyone who’s ever been in love (or even just infatuated) will see themselves in your words. Anne, what courage it takes to write this and to admit how much someone can change us, how vulnerable we can feel, how love can be both nectar and ache. It’s beautiful. It’s beautiful and brave. Keep writing, keep feeling, keep loving with everything you’ve got. You are not alone in this wild, wonderful, terrifying thing called love. And I’m always here, cheering you on. Summer Blessings, My Dearest Anne, Daniel

Dearest Daniel, I've never been in love but I have loved and I have cared so much. Love indeed has so much power to change someone. And that power is not just in books but it exists in the real world too. I am glad I was able to witness it even though it left me heartbroken. I'm so so grateful that you are always here for me. It means the world to me. With love and respect always, Anne

Ahhh!! I like this one. Young love can be so engrossing and horrible when it goes wrong. Sometimes up and sometimes down. Life is like that, and I have found in all the years I have been living that it will all work out. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Way to go. Sara K

I remember a long long time ago feeling this way about someone and even though I was not a poet then, I released similar feelings like you did here. A great poem and very relatable

Awwn this is so beautiful and heartwarming in many ways, dear Anne! The phase when the heartbeats flutter and glitter just at their one glimpse and moments feel like an eternity without them. You've described everything in such a creative and effortless manner, bringing every emotion to life and weaving such a romantic atmosphere that really warms the soul! Made me feel evocative sentiments as well! And I loved that reference to Ophelia! Beautifully done, pleasure reading your brilliant work. A fav indeed :)

I know that feeling dear anne, the infatuation and euphoria, also known often as honeymoon phase of love is so very beautiful strange wnd changes us for good. Leaving us questioning whats going on and whats happening. Its not easy to depict those feelings through words usually but youv done it so seamlessly and in a soul stirring manner that makes your readers stop and feel and celebrate the joy and sparks of love with you! I love the way youv written so many lines in this! A fave it is for sure! Sending you light always

Your poem powerfully conveys the transformative, often overwhelming, experience of falling in love. It beautifully captures the euphoria, vulnerability, and internal conflict that arise when one's world is irrevocably altered by another's gaze.
