What Comes First

The very first poem of the new year
Should it be full of good cheer
Or should it make one shed a tear

How about something really weird
Or scary, about stuff we fear
A bit tawdry perhaps, to make one leer

Of course, there's the topic to be chosen
Perchance Winter and all things frozen
Or maybe, to fast forward to Spring
'Light, gentle breezes' have a poetic ring

Then there's the matter of the poem's style
Rhymes like this one often bring a smile
But free verse is in these days, as are haikus
   Limericks, couplets, senryus and monokus

And last, but certainly not least
An important point to keep in mind
Is that as a poet, I should be kind
   Enough to my dear readers
To get to the point without further delay
~ If, in fact, I've anything left to say
