What Aileth Thee

WHAT AILETH THEE?? What aileth thee, my soul, that thou art sad? Why have thine words stopped pouring out in pain? Why doth thou from poetry now abstain? Wherefore art thou in melancholy clad? Thou knowest that sans words, thou wilt turn mad, Tell me how to make thee cheery and sane ~ What aileth thee? Look at others around thee, aren't they glad? Why not, for once, let words have their free reign? Then thou wilt feel such joy thou can't contain, Don't live on subtractions, just let smiles add ~ What aileth thee? 20th October, 2022 For Jeff Kyser's "Rousing Rondine" contest

Why not, for once, let words have their free reign? And yes, I know, the idiom is "free rein", but words are so much more than horses! I am stuck in a dry spell, and this one really spoke to me, and I like the "old english" style as well. Congrats, Jo, on your 2nd place finish.

Jo, I hear echoes of Psalm 42 in this write - "why so downcast, O my soul; why so disturbed deep within me?" Your Shakespearean language here gives a King James Bible vibe to this poem. I just love the line "Don't live on subtractions, just let smiles add". I am curious if you have been suffering a long dry spell, or maybe life has been overwhelming. In any case, I am overjoyed to read your wonderful writing again, and I trust all is well in your world. What a talent you have; thank you so much for sharing it with us. Blessings ~ John
