Ought not

a prayer be:

a thanksgiving,

a forging of our union with the divine, 

a celebration of our relationship with God

and 

not simply a plea for favors or bargaining of 

any kind?

Human nature is always asking God for things. Few give thanks for salvation it is for the most part a want. Truth spoken here Demetrios.

We ask so much of God- in desperation our prayers often sound like wishes to a fairy- a wish for a magic wand- but still think they are well meant- if the prayers are for others and not for material gain- but you are right- Amen. Hugs Julie XXX

Unfortunately, there's a doctrine that's popular in the States called "the prosperity gospel", that teaches (even promotes) the idea of asking God for favors and material prosperity. Not biblical (but I can see why it's popular) ... Wise words, my friend.
