Notes About The Poem

WEIGHT OF ADVERSTIY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At first, it was only a pebble~
something to kick aside with the toe of your boot,
to send skittering into the gutter.
Then the pebble grew.
Not overnight—no,
but quietly, when you weren’t looking,
it became a stone.
You carried it in your pocket,
rolled it between restless fingers,
let it wear holes in your seams.
Then the stone became a boulder.
You tried pushing it
but the dang thing wouldn’t budge.
You tried climbing it,
but your hands slipped on the wet cracks.
So you studied it.
learning its jagged edges,
the way moss clung to its shadowed side,
the way rain pooled in its hollows.
And one morning,
you realized~
you were no longer beneath it.
You were simply beside it.
Still there.
Still heavy.
But no longer carrying it.
