Notes About The Poem

I did a similar Pantoum in June 2017 called Funeral For A Dying World.  I just started an English Creative Writing class at Monterey Peninsula College (as well as a class that analyzes poetry) and had to submit a formed poem, so came up with this one.  The topic was "The Way We Live Now.

We Have Only Ourselves To Blame

We Have Only Ourselves To Blame

The way we live now seems barely the same,
Enduring one ecological disaster after another.
It’s obvious we have only ourselves to blame
For changing the climate and the weather.

Enduring one ecological disaster after another:
Rampant forest fires, pollution, desertification.
For changing the climate and the weather -
Too much industrialization and deforestation!

Rampant forest fires, pollution, desertification…
Species extinction from loss of natural habitats;
Too much industrialization and deforestation!
We’re destroying everything, everywhere, like spoiled brats.

Species extinction from loss of natural habitats???
It’s obvious we have only ourselves to blame!
We’re destroying everything, everywhere, like spoiled brats.
The way we live now seems barely the same.

Such a tough form, so beautifully written. I agree with all that you say. Yes we have only ourselves to blame. I feel sad for other Living species.
