We Chose the Time

We chose the time.

To whisper goodbye.

Her senses are heightened for a moment.

Then we whisper again a second time.

But she is senseless.

We are afraid that the last thing she will remember is not our embrace-

But the start of our cries.

The vet is looking at her watch.

But we chose the time.
