We Changed What We Loved

We have opened each other up,
inspected and judged,
adjusted the unwanted
to our better liking.

We have tweaked and fenagled,
all those foibles,
picadilloes and perceived flaws,
tried very hard to smooth-out
all those rough edges.

We are still working on one another.
ever watchful for new defects and slipups,
and have quite forgotten, who we were before
we demanded perfection...

that carefree, innocent time
when an all-encompassing love
accepted unquestionably,
a broken past and a brave heart.
